about

Record Kicks proudly pres. Juno Awards nominee Tanika Charles. Her debut album "Soul Run", produced among others by Slakah The Beatchild - best known for his works with Drake - will be released on Record Kicks next April the 7th.

Already filed under "one of the heavy hitter of 2017" and anticipated by its first single, the title tracks "Soul Run" which is hitting the airwaves all around the globe, Soul Run is the debut album by Edmonton-raised Tanika Charles.

The album strikes a seamless balance between the warm authentic vintage Motown soul sound, yet contains a contemporary twist to it. A tricky thing to accomplish, however, Tanika has undeniably managed to achieve this, judging by the glowing reviews and support she's currently receiving from all around the globe, including a nomination at the 2017 Juno Awards (the Canadian Grammys) for best R&b/Soul album of year.

"The most buzzed-about Soul singer in Toronto" according to CBC network, in a few short years has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and bandleader, a staple in the Canadian soul scene, both on stage and off. Her touring career has seen her supporting the likes of Estelle, Haitus Kayote, Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray. Highly impressive, considering she is only just releasing her debut album to the world, after her low-key EP release, 'What! What? What!?', back in 2010.

Growing up on a musical diet of Patti Labelle, Jill Scott, Bob James, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, Bjork and The Black Crows, Charles' eclectic music taste subconsciously shines through in 'Soul Run', an album's name that came from a tragic part of Tanika's life. Miss Charles presents an immutable charm, at times endearingly abrasive and honest in her vulnerabilities. If Tanika's singing it, she's lived it! Soul Run "is a post breakup album. It's not about a breakup as such, but about finding yourself after hitting the reset button", Charles makes clear. Tanika Charles put a modern, edgy twist on the classic Motown sound, resulting in an album that captures the ears and feet of anyone in a 5 mile radius. Fans of Sharon Jones, Lee Fields, Lauryn Hill and Macy Gray... watch out !!!

Track Name: Soul Run
Once lived my life on the prairies Not by choice

He told me we gonna get married Ha!

I was high, I was low Left behind kitchen doors

Got a woman feeling bagged and weary Cooking that crab meat, drinking Labatts Blue in a trailer full up of black

Flies on the window, feels like that Time to change my running

I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never

He said “Baby you’re a cold one” But I had to leave that town Take it to the road hun

Soul run, soul run

I make a mess every place I go Why should here be different
I’m so fly, I got soul, get in so much trouble
Got a bunch of brothers fighting over me One on my bracelet, one on my mind
 Both getting anxious, alright, alright

I got my kicks and I said goodbye to both
 Time to change my running

I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never
I’m on the road, on the road again I could never look back, never

He said “Baby you’re a cold one”

But I was having too much fun to care Take it to the road hun

Soul run, soul run

Said I’m leaving now, I’m leaving now I’m leaving you i’m leaving

Put my bags inside your jeep

I stole your keys and now I’m speeding
Track Name: Love Fool
You might think by now my heart would be hardened After all that dull my edge should be sharpened

It’s so dull without you baby
Can I show ya, let me show ya

Now do you remember them things I told ya Because I can’t forget the way that I’d hold you
Baby, you got that true contact, if you walk back baby

Baby no matter what I do

There ain’t no getting over you

Don’t know why I’m in love with you

Maybe I’m just a love fool

Could it be you fell and bumped your head child You get drunk one night, turn right, not left how?
Could you lose your foot and find her bed now
Boy tell me, can you tell me?

Cuz I’m sinking beneath this wave Can’t stop only you can save me Please jump back in boy and take me Oh, I’m shaking

This is crazy

Baby no matter what I do

There ain’t no getting over you

Don’t know why I’m in love with you

Maybe I’m just a love fool

When you left you hurt me and my heart it worried
If love doesn’t hurry, I can’t wait, can’t take this slow

Don’t you know by now boy, if you say stay
I won’t go, you say yes, won’t say no

Just let me know

Can you feel my boy cause I’m reaching out I just need your touch right now

And so much more yeah

Love fool, love fool, silly little love fool

Love fool, love fool, silly little love fool

Love fool, love fool, silly little love fool

Love fool, love fool, silly little love fool

Baby no matter what I do

There ain’t no getting over you

Don’t know why I’m in love with you

Maybe I’m just a love fool
